Book Highlight : Fifty First Times

The First Birth

Aihik Saha
Our life is a humdrum affair where most things occur in repetition .Some of it in a cyclical manner and some just leave their impressions randomly in the timeline of our life, there is a "first" - the one that not just leave their impression but engrave it in the core of our memory and experience. I am one of those lucky few who got the chance to join the medical profession by choice. Each day had been exciting as the other with surprises (not all are pleasant!)Spring up Hitler & thither. Running into the 3rd month of the 2nd year I was posted in the obstetrics and 1 were directed to the delivery room. We were about to witness the birth of a baby for the 1st time in our lives. The Ist hour or so had been uneventful with the lady going into the 2nd stage of labor in the second hour. The team of doctors and nurses were on their toes prepared to bring forth another being on this earth. Needless to say the lady was in severe pain she went on bearing down. Within 45 min the head of the baby was visible. In a minutes time the head was delivered after which the rest followed. The baby's Nose and mouth were cleared off the fluid and the baby started crying and moving its limbs. The baby was caripeal dry, wrapped in a towel and placed just beside the mother under the warmer. After the remaining procedures the baby was given to the mother. It was a boy, pink in color. The baby cued feebly, with its eyes barely open, moved its arms as if to reach out for something. The mother held on to the baby fondly, the pain overshadowed by limitless joys evident by the calm smile and the teary eyes. The father was standing just behind. Although the delivery I was more a statue mode. I knew I had a strong heart which I felt could barely be swayed well I was proved wrong that day when I was moved beyond anything till date. This is still the most beautiful thing that I have witnessed till date and each time there after I witnessed the birth of a baby I am overwhelmed with joy. Thank You...
