Author Interview : Kelley Lynn

Today we are featuring Author Kelley Lynn as a part of a virtual tour of her new book Road to Somewhere
She is Here with us and we will be having a lot of chit-chat but first let me introduce you to her

Author Kelley Lynn

Kelley Lynn was born and raised a Midwestern girl. She’s not afraid to sweat and fills her free time with softball, soccer and volleyball. (Though you probably don’t want her on your volleyball team.) She occasionally makes guest appearances as a female vocalist for area bands. Music plays a large role in her writing process as well as the characters and plot lines within her stories.

Interview

Aihik Saha
  • Welcome to our blog. Tell us something special about your book.
  • Thanks so much for having me! I’m really looking forward to this interview. Okay, something special about this book. I think what makes ROAD TO SOMEWHERE unique is that its told from alternating point of views between two sisters. It delves into the complicated relationship between siblings and we’re able to see how that relationship evolves from two different point of views. Of course there’s romance and cowboys so that doesn’t hurt either. 

  • This is Your second novel and you have cut across from fantasy to contemporary genre, quite a difficult leap. What is Your source of inspiration behind such varied tastes of novels that You have dished out?
  • This is my second novel but my first contemporary. I think the biggest differences between the two genres are that in a genre like Fantasy, I, as the author, get to make up a lot of the rules of the world that my characters live in. That’s pretty darn fun. In a contemporary, I’m restricted to the rules of our world, and this challenge is fun in and of itself too. The most fascinating part for me about writing is creating the characters. Pushing them to do things they don’t want to do, and finding out how they’re changed throughout their journey. This happens no matter what genre these characters are in. So while it’s a little different, the core of the stories are the same. For me, its all about the characters.

  • Describe the characters in five words each.
  • Charlotte (Charlie) – Determined. Stubborn. Loyal. Confused. Vocalist. Lucy – Petite. Intelligent. Shy. Young. Pianist.

  • Tell us something about your counterpart Jenny S. Morris who has co authored in the novel. How did You two come on board? Were there any creative differences between you two?
  • Jenny S. Morris and I were critique partners who also coauthored a blog with some friends. For a blog post, Jenny and I decided to collaborate and had a lot of fun doing so. After that, Jenny asked if I wanted to try my hand at a full length novel with her. I immediately said, “YES!” The collaboration process with Jenny was actually very smooth. The key was to lay out what we did, and most importantly, DID NOT want included in our novel. After we decided to write from two sister’s POVs, we took her knowledge of the South and my knowledge of the Midwest and put together a pretty darn fun road trip.

  • This story is about a road trip. How many road trips have you gone for? Any personal experiences or events that have found place in the novel?
  • I’ve done a few road trips in my day. I actually just went on a road trip with my sister and two cousins last summer. We visited New York City and Pennsylvania. It was so much fun. Since Jenny is from the South, we relied on her knowledge of that area for the majority of this book. We have the cowboys and the sweet tea and the horse ranches. I think we both could relate to the cramped spaces and tribulations that come from shoving a lot of people in one vehicle. Its fun to write a contemporary story because so much of it is based on reality. And many times, the author’s reality.

  • Your story is about two sisters. There are very few authors who have taken up this beautiful relation and woven an intriguing tale. Congratulations on that. Tell us how did You shape the story.
  • Well thank you! It really started out that Jenny and I wanted to write alternating point of view, but didn’t want to take the traditional boy/girl route. We both have sisters so we thought, why not delve into that complicated relationship? Jenny had the idea for Charlie (the older sister) in her head right away so I told her to run with it. Lucy is very loosely based on a younger version of my younger sister. For me it was fun to look at a sister relationship from the younger sister’s point of view, because I’ve never been one. Hopefully I got pretty close to how it is. (I guess my younger sister, who ironically is named Jenny just like my collab partner, will have to tell me how I did. )

  • You are a blogger and have done tours and promotions for various other authors. How does it feel when today other bloggers are doing tours and promotions for You? Any message or advice for bloggers who aspire to become writers?
  • The support from other readers, bloggers and writers has just been phenomenal. It takes a lot to get a book published. (You can feel free to read about this book’s specific journey here: http://getbetweenthebookends.blogspot.com/2014/03/road-to-somewhere-release-day.html) My advice for other aspiring writers is to take whatever path you think is best for you. And to understand that as you go through this journey, your idea of what that path should look like will most likely change. Through rejections after rejections I told myself that if I never give up, publication WILL happen for me someday. Now that I’ve accomplished that goal, I’m setting new ones. The ultimate goal fro me is to make sure that being an author is fun. So far, its been a blast.

  • Lastly why should readers give this book a read?
  • It’s a fun, light journey between two sisters. I think it would be hard to find someone that can’t relate to some part of either Charlie or Lucy. Whether you have siblings of your own, or have friends who are like siblings, the growth that Charlie and Lucy experience with their relationship, and with themselves, is a journey most will enjoy witnessing.

  • Thank You for being with us.

Road to Somewhere

Release date: March 11th 2014
Publisher: Bloomsbury Spark
New! From Bloomsbury Spark, a sunny heartwarming story of discovery and sisterhood.

A road trip. A singing competition. And super-hot cowboys.

What could be better?

For Charlie, a post-high school road trip isn't just a vacation, it's life changing. While her parents think she's helping a friend move, a chance at fame is the real reason to grab her best friends and drive to L.A. But when her super annoying, uber-responsible, younger sister, Lucy, has to tag along, it isn't quite the summer of fun she imagined.

Add in a detour to her grandparents' ranch in Texas, and between mucking the stalls, down-home cookin’, and drool worthy ranch hands, this could just turn into the best, and most complicated, summer of their lives.

Co-Author

Jenny S. Morris is a YA author who loves all things geek, may have a Kdrama addiction, and prefers the rainy NW to any place she's ever lived. Road to Somewhere is her debut novel.
