A Peek at Cecilia Gray's Library

Cecilia Gray

I'm fascinated by celebrity book lists (Oprah, lookin' at you…). They always seem to be a mix of literary fiction, edgy memoir, and a cookbook of some kind, as crafted by a publicist's idea of what ideal mix of literature will make someone seem intellectual yet relatable.

I'm not a celebrity and have no idea what my library says about me, but I thought I'd share anyway.

The book that has been on my shelf forever: Just As Long As We're Together by Judy Blume.

This book was every angsty friendship I ever had rolled into a few hundred pages. Judy Blume has a mild meld with the teen-me. I met Judy Blume once. She sat next to me at a conference. I managed not to pee my pants. I think I deserve a medal for that.

The dirty secret book I love that's not so secret because I talk about it all the time: Rule by Jay Crownover.

I went through a new adult phase that put me through almost 100 books in a couple of months and the one I kept coming back to was Rule. The titular character is the tattooed, pierced bad boy with a heart of gold who knows right from wrong but is ruled by his head (that other head). Rule manages to be a bad boy without being misogynistic, controlling or downright mean. The next guy I'm with better have a conveniently placed piercing. That's all I'm saying about that.

The book that keeps me up at night: Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein

A young-adult historical about female fighter pilots and spies during World War II will have you so twisted up inside you make new friends just to make them read this book just to talk about it with someone who isn't sick of you wanting to talk about it.

The book that I can't get anyone else to read: The Rainbow of Mathematics by Ivor Grattan-Guinness

You know that annoying person at a party who answers every anecdotal story or assertion with, "The data doesn't support that…" Yeah, that's me. Douchebags like me love books like this.

The book that I wrote: any book in The Jane Austen Academy series

Jane Austen also features pretty heavily in my bookshelf, and I grew up reading her and admiring her heroines. I liked them so much, I kind of wished they all knew each other. Can't you imagine Elizabeth Bennet and Emma Woodhouse arguing about whether Willoughby is good for Marianne Dashwood?
I did – I imagined it so much I wrote a series about it.

Only With You by Cecilia Gray

Dive into the fabulous, fun lives of six Academy girls as their friendships are tested, torn and ultimately triumph…

Emma has it all – looks, money, and luck. It’s not like she keeps it all to herself – she’s totally committed to helping those less fortunate. AKA, everyone. She invites her heartbroken friend to help with a weekend charity event with an eye to matchmake, but when that friend turns her eye toward the guy Emma wants for herself, how will she choose between friendship and her own feelings?

* * *

The last thing that the girls at the elite Jane Austen Academy need is hot guys to flirt with. But over the summer the school has been sold, and like it or not, the guys are coming. And it’s about to turn the Academy—and the lives of its students—totally upside down…

The Jane Austen Academy series are modern retellings of Jane Austen classics set at a beachside California boarding school.

About the Author

Cecilia Gray lives in the San Francisco Bay Area where she reads, writes and breaks for food. She also pens her biographies in the third person. Like this. As if to trick you into thinking someone else wrote it because she is important. Alas, this is not the case.

She’s rather enamored of being contacted by readers and hopes you’ll oblige.
